How to Create Distance In A Family Relationship
This topic caught my eye because I suffer from the opposite problem – I live alone and wish that my sibling would call or reach out from time to time since we were close when we were young. Although I know that my sibling never read your article, if he had, it would explain why he treats me the way he does. The advice is all centered around the person who is being advised, “it is ok to need your space.” What about the family member who, rightly or wrongly, would like their company? There is no mention in this article about one’s actions’ effect on another person. Even a simple suggestion for how to deal with the family member who needs to give you the space to which you are entitled. The article could suggest ways to gently let the family member know that they are loved, without coming to rescue them. It doesn’t even suggest the very rude, “Get some help,” which someone used on me once. Does the article advocate ghosting relatives? I feel that modern psychology does often emphasize the individual’s rights over any kind of consideration, kindness, or basic social tactics. This article confirms my impression.
