A sore throat and strep throat can feel quite similar, but there are some key differences:

Sore Throat

  • Causes: Often caused by viruses like the common cold or flu, but can also be due to allergies, dry air, or irritants.
  • Symptoms: Includes a scratchy or painful throat, runny nose, cough, sneezing, and red or watery eyes.
  • Duration: Usually resolves on its own within a few days to a week.
  • Treatment: Rest, hydration, throat lozenges, and over-the-counter pain relievers.

Strep Throat

  • Causes: Caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus).
  • Symptoms: Sudden severe sore throat, pain when swallowing, red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or pus, fever, swollen neck glands, headache, and abdominal pain. Notably, strep throat does not typically cause a cough.
  • Duration: Requires antibiotics for treatment and can lead to complications if left untreated.
  • Treatment: Antibiotics like penicillin or amoxicillin, rest, and supportive care like throat sprays and lozenges.

If you suspect strep throat, it’s important to see a healthcare provider for a throat swab to confirm the diagnosis and start appropriate treatment.
